The story is set on a small island just off the coast of Ireland. It starts with everyone gathered in the tent to celebrate the wedding of Will, a rising television star, and Jules, a magazine publisher. A waitress finds a body, but we are not told whose. Then we go few days in the past and meet the bride, the groom and some of the guests. As they explore the location, simultaneously unusual and yet somehow fitting for the wealthy couple, old secrets and resentments start coming to the surface.

Now, her and her boyfriend were hired by Roman Ellis, a fellow ghost hunter, to investigate the haunting of a Florida plantation house. The problem is their new boss is not exactly an honest person. However, after being wrongly accused of blackmail and spending six months in prison Alice is desperate for money so she reluctantly accepts the offer. When she gets there things quickly fall apart as she stumbles over a dead body and, because of her record, immediately becomes the main suspect.

The story follows Arthur who is trying to save his house from being Demolished as part of the plans for a new highway. Then, his best friend Ford Prefect reveals that the whole Earth will be destroyed because of an intergalactic highway.

It turns out Ford is an alien. He helps Arthur escape on a passing spaceship, thus, starting their journey around the galaxy. Along the way they meet the two-headed president of the galaxy, a woman from Earth who is his girlfriend and a depressed robot.

As they move from one adventure to the next, they learn of a great threat that could destroy them all.
