Ten Loves – Zhang Yueran | BOOK REVIEW

Rating:

English cover:

This is a collection of short stories which, as the title suggests, talk about love, but not in a way you would expect. They are not romantic, but actually deal with some heavier topics. Among other things, we see a wife sacrifice herself for her husband and a mother taking care of her son.

In the beginning I thought the book won’t be for me. It was well written, but some of the stories didn’t leave much of an impact. However, the author is good at describing the experiences of those who are alone, rejected, powerless, overwhelmed with sorrow, who have conflicted emotions and don’t use the opportunities available to them and the more I read the more I enjoyed myself.

There is a strong sense of melancholy in the stories. They talk about serious topics such as loss, family violence and suicide. Some of them play with reality and dreams to the point you don’t know what is real and what isn’t, thus creating a unique atmosphere, at the same time familiar and unsettling. This also makes certain stories seem nonsensical and hard to follow. We meet people who are different, lonely, who have inner conversations with themselves. There are some bizarre concepts, too. For example, we see a husband making music instruments form his wife’s bones.

Many of the scenes in this book are amazing, the ideas in it creative and complex. Unfortunately, despite that, a few stories didn’t leave a strong impression hence somewhat of a lower rating.
